Rachel Hwang

I grew up in a Christian home, and my family has believed in Jesus for five generations. My father was a church planter, and he passed away when I was in Grade 5 due to an electrical accident. While dealing with the pain of fatherlessness and grief, I often felt lonely and struggled with insecurity. A few years later, my mother planted another church, and I enjoyed helping by serving in small ways, such as sweeping and mopping the church floor.

Since 2014, God has called my family to serve among the people of Ahousaht First Nation. I currently live in the Ahousaht reserve with my husband and our six children. Two of our children were born in Korea, while the others were born in Ahousaht. They all attend Maaqtusiis School and are growing up learning both the Nuu-chah-nulth and Korean languages. It has been a blessing to watch them appreciate the culture, history, and community of Ahousaht.

Living in a remote reserve without a hospital has not been easy, especially while raising children and facing seasons of loneliness, depression, and uncertainty. During the COVID-19 lockdown, while pregnant with my fifth child, I experienced deep fear and emotional struggle. In the midst of those difficult moments, God reminded me of Luke 4:18 and renewed my calling to remain in the community, to pray for people, and to share the hope of Jesus Christ with those who are hurting and broken.

Since then, God has been teaching me to depend fully on the Holy Spirit. Through Discovery Bible Study ministry, prayer gatherings, and discipleship within the community, I have witnessed people encounter Jesus personally and experience hope and healing through God’s Word.

At the same time, God has also led me to continue growing academically and spiritually. I will graduate with a Master of Arts in Biblical Leadership from Northwest Seminary in August 2026. My studies have strengthened my understanding of intercultural ministry, disciple-making, and contextualized leadership development among Indigenous communities. Through this journey, I have come to see more clearly that God is a missionary God who calls ordinary and weak people to participate in His mission through surrender, obedience, prayer, and love.

Being a missionary among the people of Ahousaht has become one of the greatest blessings in my life. God continues to teach me how to listen to His voice, trust Him in weakness, and faithfully join His work of raising disciples and bringing healing to communities through the power of Jesus Christ.
